The Roman dodecahedron dates back to about 200 AD, and it is a small hollow object that is typically made from bronze or on the rarest of occasions from stone. It has a shape that is geometrical with twelve pentagonal faces that are flat and with each of them having a hole that is circular in the middle of it. All of the sides are then connected to the center, which is hollow.

Embellished Dodecahedrons Have Been Found Around 4cm To 11cm

The dodecahedron is often embellished with many knobs, or spheroids, which are typically set at each of the corner points on the Pentagon. The objects are fascinating to look at, and they typically range from around 4cm to around 11cm. The objects have been located in many various parts of the Roman Empire in Europe, and the focus of the findings of them has been in southwest Germany, France, and modern central Europe. Over one hundred of the artifacts have been located in total.

There have been many different theories over the course of time that has been formulated, and scientists have tried to clarify what the dodecahedron might have been used for in Roman times. The function and use of them are unknown because there hasn’t been any mention of them in any of the pictures or text of that time.

Many speculations About Usage Including Childs Toy And Bludgeon

There has been plenty of speculation that they may have been used as holders for candles and this theory came to light after wax had been found on one of the dodecahedrons discovered. Other uses are thought to be scepter or staff decorations, stands to hold flowers, a device used for fortune telling, a dice, children’s toy, bludgeon and even a device for measuring, possibly for the measurement of objects on the battlefield.

One of the theories that are most widely held is that the dodecahedron was used as a religious object. This theory gained popularity after examples had been discovered in Gallo-Roman sites, with one object being found in the burial ground of a woman.

The dodecahedrons of the Roman times have been discussed long and hard in regards to what they were actually used for and up to now, no real satisfactory explanations have been given.
