For telephone scams to be effective, the scammer needs to find a vulnerable person who is not aware of all of the scams out there. However, the popular YouTube hacker behind the Channel Project Mayhem is neither of these things, and some scammers got a nasty surprise when they tried to pull their tricks on him.
A cold call scammer targeted the hacker by pretending to be a worker for the Internal Revenue Service. The scammer attempted to convince him that he owed tax money and that if it were not paid immediately, then he would be arrested. The YouTube hacker immediately knew that he was the target of a scam and decided to put his technological skills to work to take his revenge and to make sure that the scammer couldn’t target anyone else again.
The hacker played along and told the scammers that he would call back once the payment had been made. While the hapless scammers were waiting for their call back, the hacker quickly cooked up a script using VoIP, which is a method of sending voice communications to telephone via the internet. This script was designed to automatically call the hackers 28 times every single second so that their phone lines would become completely unusable.
In addition to halting their scam, the hacker also made sure that the crooks were in no doubt as to what had happened. Every time that they answered one of the many calls made to their telephone, they heard a message saying, “Hello, it has been detected that you are a scammer. Because of this, we are now flooding your phone lines to prevent you from scamming additional people. This will not stop until you stop.”
The hacker behind Project Mayhem recorded the responses of the scammers as they received this message multiple times and it is safe to say that they certainly did not appreciate him putting a halt to their illegal activity. The fall out of this ingenious prank is available of Project Mayhem’s YouTube channel.
