The US Military once experimented with creating real flying saucers.

Four years ago the United States Air Force declassified an important selection of documents. Among these intriguing reports which were once top secret included a plan to build and fly aircraft that would be modeled after flying saucers in the 1950s. The United States planned for these unique aircraft to supersonic and a primary defense against Soviet bombers.

The declassified documents reveal that the government and the military had incredibly ambitious plans for these flying saucer-like creations. They expected the planes to be able to reach a top speed of Mac 4, which is around four times the speed of sound or approximately 2600 miles per hour. To put that into perspective, a journey from New York to Miami would take approximately twenty-four minutes at this speed. They also hoped that the planes would be able to fly at an altitude of an astonishing 100,000 feet which would allow pilots to operate in the stratosphere of the Earth if necessary. The engineers planned for the aircraft to take off and land vertical using propulsion jets to control and stabilize the craft when it was in motion.

In the documents from the 1950s, the engineers and other professionals working on the project, which was referred to as Project 1794, were incredibly optimistic about how well the development was going. They even suggested that their experiments with the phenomenal technology were going better than they had believed it would during the draft stages.

However, in 1961 the project was terminated for good after the developers ran into irrevocable problems with the design. It was decided that the shape of the flying saucer was aerodynamically unstable which meant that pilots would find it almost impossible to control while flying at high speeds.

While the details of Project 1794 are interesting in and of themselves, they may also clear up some questions concerning UFO sightings in the United States. In the 1950s, reported sightings of unidentified flying objects peaked in the United States whereas the rest of the world experienced no such increase in sightings. Could it be that some of the individuals who believed they saw alien space craft were witnessing top secret government test flights?
