I use a watec 902h low light cctv camera to monitor for lightning induced transient luminous events as well as fireballs. the camera records every night. for years i have infrequently recorded “flashes” of light on the camera. these are not planes as i regularly record planes and know how they look like on the recording. in the past i’ve just assumed that the flashes are from satellites. but after investigating more i’ve noticed that there are no tracked satellites in the spots where i see these flashes. the most likely culprit would be iridium flares, but for this example there was no iridium satellite in the area at the time of the event. on the recording software, i purposely have a head of 30 frames and tail of 120 frames to ensure that the flash is not from an airplane that has a slow pulsating strobe. these are single flash events of unknown origin to me. i’m an amateur astro-photographer and familiar with how satellites look as they traverse the sky. it’s possible that the flashes are caused by some sort of tumbling object in outer-space that reflects the suns light for an instant. this might explain why nothing shows up in the norad element data i use for tracking satellites.
