Scientists have long been baffled by the fact that the Milky Way galaxy is moving through the universe at a speed of more than 2 million kilometers an hour, or 630 kilometers a second apparently without any reason why. Now, a group of scientists from Hebrew University might have finally solved the mystery.
Scientists might have discovered why the Milky Way is moving so fast
Astronomers have been aware for many years that there is an incredibly dense supercluster of galaxies approximately 650 million light-years away from the Milky War that is pulling the galaxy towards it by the sheer force of its gravity. The Shapley Concentration has an intensely powerful gravitational force as it is the largest known concentration of matter in the known universe. However, this intense gravitational pull alone is not enough to explain the speed the Milky Way is currently traveling at.
In the past, scientists have theorized that the Shapley Concentration is being balanced out by an area of extraordinarily low density on the opposite side of the Milky Way. This region of space, which would have to be almost empty of galaxies, would be pushing the Milky Way away from it with an equally tremendous, yet converse, force. The Cosmic Microwave Background project has suggested that these two opposing regions of space would have to sit on either side of the Milky Way on the same axis.
Now, cosmologist Yehuda Hoffman and his team have mapped out a 3D vision of the closest galaxies to the Milky Way and appear to have identified the mysterious ‘dead zone’ referred to in theoretical academia. They have dubbed this expansive and empty portion of space as the Dipole Repeller.”By 3D mapping the flow of galaxies through space, we found that our Milky Way galaxy is speeding away from a large, previously unidentified region of low density, ” said Hoffman, “In addition to being pulled towards the known Shapley Concentration, we are also being pushed away from the newly discovered Dipole Repeller. Thus it has become apparent that push and pull are of comparable importance at our location.”
