A Mysterious lull in US aircraft carrier activity was to prepare for war.
Two weeks ago, the United States found itself in the incredibly unusual position of having no aircraft carriers deployed at any location on the globe. It was believed that this was the first time since the Second World War that the American military had been so underrepresented on the world stage.
Now it appears as though things are returning to a sense of normalcy following a mass deployment of ships and aircraft carriers from the Carl Vinson Carrier Strike Group which left San Diego was a scheduled deployment to the western Pacific in the past week. It is said that the American soldiers will be acting to provide support and tactical guidance to American allies in the politically tense Pacific Rim region.
Various factors contributed to the highly unusual blip in U.S. Navy activity. Congressionally mandated budget cuts, also known as sequestration, have been biting at the Navy for some years now. Billions of dollars have been cut from the military’s budget which has meant that the construction of ships has been much slower than in the preceding decades meaning that the Navy simply do not have the resources to maintain an active presence throughout the world.
Other sources within the military have claimed that the temporary lull in routine operations is because the U.S. Army is preparing for war. “This is the military equivalent of spring training because once we complete this at the end of December, then we’ll be going forward and it’ll be real forces that we’ll be going flying with and against, ” said Rear Adm. Kenneth Whitesell.
Captain William Pennington said that while there are not emergent or pending conflicts with either Russia or China that the hostility between these two nations and the United States meant that the Navy, among other sections in the armed forces, had to be prepared to take offensive action if it were to become necessary.
