The United States military has deployed an enormous amount of manpower, military vehicles and weaponry to Germany in what appears to be a show of strength against the Russian Federation.

European concerns about potential Russian aggression have been heightened since 2014 when Russian troops invaded the neighboring state of Ukraine and annexed the primarily ethnic Russian region of Crimea. The move attracted international condemnation and was interpreted as a Russian display of strength against the European Union who was in negotiation with the Ukrainian government at the time regarding potential membership. Since Russia’s unprecedented and audacious actions in Ukraine which sparked a prolonged period of social unrest throughout the country, other Eastern European countries with large ethnically Russian populations such as Latvia have been concerned about their countries also being invaded. For his part, President Putin has assured neighboring European countries that the Kremlin of attacking anyone in the region. However, given the speed of the Russian military operation in Ukraine, it appears that the European powers and their American allies are not prepared to leave anything to chance.

The US military presence in Europe is said to be an attempt to assuage these fears. The deployment of serious military muscle, Operation Atlantic Resolve, has been described as an effort to demonstrate to America’s European allies that they count on the force of the US military in the event of Russian aggression or any violation of their sovereignty. “We intend to reassure all those here in Europe that we are committed to peace and security, and to send a signal to anybody else who would differ with that, that that’s not gonna work, ” said Lt. General Timothy Ray, deputy commander of the U.S.’s European command.

It is believed that in the course of the next week, the enormous American military deployment will leave Germany for the eastern European country of Poland. From there, it has been suggested that that equipment and the personnel will come to be stationed all across Europe in countries which believe themselves to be vulnerable to aggressive Russian expansionist policies.
