Do aliens exist? Hundreds of photos and videos claiming to show unidentified flying objects (UFOs) are pictured every year and enthusiasts believe many of them could be proof or even a hidden conspiracy.

While some have been debunked as fake, some have left even the experts scratching their heads and wondering if we really have been visited by life from another planet. Here, we take a look at some of the most recent suspected UFO sightings in the skies of Derbyshire.


An unexplained blue flash of light which provoked a debate as to whether aliens were in the skies above South Derbyshire was caught on video last year.

The strange event, which took place on Thursday, August 25 in the skies above Swadlincote, had a large number of residents taking to social media to try to find out what the cause of the mysterious blue light was.

Ernest Redfern, 85, took this picture from his back garden on The Green in Allestree, whilst trying to capture a rainbow on the horizon.

His sighting sparked a kerfuffle among paranormal fans last February. He got in touch with The Derby Telegraph hoping that readers could explain his strange sighting in the sky, which he captured by accident with his camera. Read the full story here.


One reader videoed what she thought was a UFO flying over South Derbyshire in June 2015. Sasha Hall spotted these flashing lights in the sky while out and about between Bretby and Newhall.


Lewis Bullock, 13, took this photo of an object in the sky over Merrill College in Alvaston in 2015, which he believed to be a flying saucer. Read the full story here.


Reports of an explosion and a large flash in the skies above Derbyshire sparked debate on social media in April 2015. Social media was abuzz with reports of an “orange flash” followed by a “bang” at around 10pm at night. It later emerged that they were due to a fire at a defence company that makes explosives and pyrotechnics.
