The book "37th Parallell" by Ben Mezrich contains some references to MUFON that seem to place it somewhere between/among the Coast Guard and the National Guard and I have to ask what people actually think of the MUFON organization. Is it worth joining if there is a local chapter? Not that I'd have much to add to it – I'd like to get involved with star parties in my area but I really think that if I do that I'll get turned off right away and will be back to doing my astronomy in the same farmland I usually do it on and would do 100% of my UFO talking and researching right here or on a very few other sites.
Concerning that book "37th Parallel" and its MUFON references – The book is chock full of silly components that make for a read that is painful at times, laughable at others. But it is especially strange to me when you consider the fact that better books will spend decades before being optioned for a big movie spend – but this thing is being fast tracked by New Line /right now/.
The book has a few moments that portray MUFON as a full on military outfit that issues equipment, has officers everywhere and a big hierarchy around it with its own "brass". The thought of "MUFON Brass" made me chuckle a little. Like… some kind of pseudo-military senior officials that have some sort of power in that tiny unproven realm. It just sounded so stupid and really made for a funny image in my head of self-inflated MUFON people and the people willing to polish that particular brass.
Am I off or is it that book that's off? I know where my guess would go. That the book is off, since I feel the book manages to subtly miss almost every single point and yet still fall for just about every type of sighting or phenomena under the Sun. But I could be, and have been very often, dead wrong about this stuff.
Anyway, what is the current opinion about MUFON, specifically here on /r/UFOs?
