Indian industrialists have been at the forefront of sustainable, clean energy technology in recent years.

Now a family run business in the southern Indian state of Kerala has come up with one of the most groundbreaking clean energy inventions to come out of India yet – a low-cost wind turbine which can generate between 3 and 5 kilowatts of electricity every day.

Indian company produces low-cost wind turbine that can power a house for a lifetime

Perpetual poor management of the power companies in both the public and private sector has led to endemic problems in sustaining electricity networks across the huge country. Many power companies run at a loss and therefore have no incentive to offer new connections or even to keep electricity running continuously. In 2012, the network was stricken by a series of problems that led to a massive and sustained power cunt, earning India the sobriquet of ‘black out nation’. Of the 600 million who were without power during this period, 200 million had never been connected to the network in the first place.

Since 2012, the central government and the municipal authorities have made energy production one of their primary priorities, but progress has been difficult. In Kerala, one of the most socially progressive states, as well as one of the wealthiest, the energy problems are still acutely felt. In response to the crisis, the Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has resorted to commissioning the Athirappilly hydroelectric project which has proved to be a highly controversial proposition. Environmentalists have said that if the project is implemented that it would create an ecological imbalance in the region and could potentially destroy the beautiful site of the Athirappilly waterfalls, which are the largest natural waterfalls in Kerala.

It was this event that motivated local businesspeople, Arun and Anoop George, to kick start their project into low-cost clean energy. Their company Avant Garde Innovations has announced the production of a low-cost wind turbine that can generate enough power to sustain an entire household for a lifetime. The turbine, which is only the size of a ceiling fan, is capable of producing 5 kilowatts a day. The product requires no ongoing payments, merely a one-time cost of $750.

“Our goal is to eliminate energy poverty, reduce dependence on struggling state power grids and create energy self-sufficiency for all the needy ones through distributed, localized and affordable renewable energy. In doing so, we believe we can collectively usher in our world a cleaner environment, new economic prosperity, and social change, ” the company’s ambitious mission statement reads. They go on to say that they hope that these small, affordable wind turbines will be the first step towards them accomplishing this goal.

The company is already attracting the attention of influential bodies within India and internationally and Avant Garde Innovations has been selected for the prestigious ‘UN Sustainable Energy For All’ initiative.
